Yannis
Pouspourikas was born in 1971 in Marseille, where he began his musical
studies. He continued at the Geneva Music High School and at the Zurich
Opera where he was awarded the Zurich Opernhaus First Prize for orchestral
conducting. He was then quickly engaged as assistant conductor at the
Opéra National de Paris and by Sir Simon Rattle at the Glyndebourne
festival.
In 1999 he made his debut in Geneva
with Die Fledermaus, conducted Cavalleria rusticana at the Interlaken
Festival, and worked regularly with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
conduction works such as La Traviata, Nabucco, Otello. In 2001, he conducted
the world premiere of Héra by Patrice Sciortino, in the salle Pleyel
in Paris. During his time with the Opéra National de Paris, he
also worked at the Glyndebourne Festival, Festival d’Orange, Teatro
Real in Madrid, at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva and at De
Munt in Brussels.
Very appreciated in the operatic
world, Yannis Pouspourikas is equally at home with orchestral repertoire
and has performed with numerous orchestras including, the Orchestre Philharmonique
de Strasbourg, Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Orchestre Colonne, Orchestre
des Pays de Savoie and Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, all to critical
acclaim. He has also performed the Soldier’s Tale in Aix-en-Provence
and in Marseille as part of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.
Yannis Pouspourikas is seen as
one of the most promising conductors of his generation. In March 2005,
he was appointed Resident Conductor at the Orchestre National de Lyon
and this year, he is also appointed Associate Conductor at the Orchestre
Symphonique de Mulhouse.
