Stephan GENZ

 

Stephan Genz was born in Erfurt (Germany) in 1973.
A member of the St. Thomas's Boys' Choir in Leipzig, he began to take an active interest in the Lieder repertory from a very early age, studying singing with Hans-Joachim Beyer at the Musikhochschule in Leipzig and with Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll in Karlsruhe and later attending classes in Lieder interpretation with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. He soon came to prominence when he won awards in such prestigious international competitions as the Johannes Brahms Competition in Hamburg and the Hugo Wolf Competition in Stuttgart. In October 1999 he received the 'Brahms-Preis des Landes Schleswig-Holstein'. In November 1999 he received the Grammophone Award in London.

He has received numerous invitations to make guest appearances, including Paris (Bastille, Theatre des Champs-Elysées), Berlin (Deutsche Staatsoper), Lausanne, Strasbourg, Milano (Teatro alla Scala), Opéra de Monte-Carlo

Stephan Genz appeared with important orchestras, performing under famous conductors such as Myung-Whun Chung, Pierre Cao, Marcus Creed, Daniel Harding, Thomas Hengelbrock, Philippe Herreweghe, Gustav Kuhn, Sigiswald Kuijken, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, Fabio Luisi, Georges Prêtre, René Jacobs, Giuseppe Sinopoli., James Judd.
Beside his engagements as an opera - and concert singer Stephan Genz became one of the most famous recital-singer in his generation.

He has given recitals in Paris (Châtelet, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées), London (Wigmore Hall), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Brussel (Opera Royal de la Monnaie), Florence (Maggio Musicale), Schubertiade Feldkirch / Hohenems, Edinburgh Festival, in Spain and Japan (Toyko, Okoyama, Nagaoka).

He recorded Lieder for Capriccio. Claves, Hyperion and Teldec.
In April 2002 Stephan Genz makes his debut at the Hamburg state Opera in a production of 'Cosi fan tutte'.
