Leo NUCCI

 

Leo Nucci was born in Castiglione dei Pepoli (Bologna), and did his singing studies wilh M° Giuseppe Marchesi in Bologna, continuing them subsequently with M° Ottavio Bizarri and with M° Mario Bigazzi.
His debut in a main role was as Figaro in Rossini's Il Barbiere Di Siviglia at the Teatro Sperimentale "A. Belli" in Spoleto in 1967.
After several years, he left beside his career as a soloist on the opera stage to become a member of the Choir of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. During those five years of activity, he continued to improve his singing ability, and took part in various competitions.
He won the "Viotti" International Competition, and subsequently to this event he made return to the opera stage as a soloist.
In 1977, he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, again in the role in Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, following, which he has begun his activity in the major Italian theatres. In 1978, his international career took off, when lie was called to substitute a colleague in the role of Miller in Verrdi's Luisa Miller at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London. Since then, he has been regularly singing in the most important theatres in the world.
His favourite roles which made him known to everybody and which brought him the major success are Rigoletto in the homonymous opera by G. Verdi, as well as Figaro in Rosssini's Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, two roles that he has - maybe the unique case in the history of opera - really sung in all the major opera houses existing.

Leo Nucci has recorded more than. thirty complete operas with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Sir Georg Solti, Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo -Chailly, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Giuseppe Patané, having as partners the most important colleagues in the opera's world.
He has also took part in two opera films: Macbeth presented at the International film Festival in Cannes in 1987, and Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, together with several live operas video-recordings.
In recent years, Leo Nucci has put beside his opera repertoire also a repertoire, wrongly called "light", once exclusive prerogative of tenors, with the record Parlami d'Amore, in collaboration with M° Paolo Marcarini. With him he has also begun a close collaboration which led him to perform several concerts in Italy and in Europe, accompanied by the instrumental group "Salotto 800".
His major appointments in 1993 and 1999 were- Un Ballo in Maschera at the Opéra in Montecarlo, Nabucco at the Opera in Rome, Il Barbiere Di Siviglia at the Opera in Marseille, La Taviata at the Opéra Bastille in Paris, Rigoletto, Un Ballo In Maschera e Nabucco at the Arena of Verona, the debut in the role "Ezio" in Attila at the Opera of Zurich, Scarpia' in Tosca at the Theatre Municipal of Santiago de Chile, a new production of La Forza Del Destino at the Theatre alla Scala of Millan, under the baton of M° Riccardo Muti, Rigoletto, Pagliacci e Il Trovatore, at the Staatsoper in Vienna, Il Barbiere Di Siviglia at the Teatro S. Carlo of Naples, Il Trovatore at the Teatro Bellini of Catania, Aida at the Arena of Verona, I Due Foscari at the Opera in Zurich, Rigoletto at Opera de Nice etc

As from 2000, he performed various times at La Scala Milano, in Tosca, then in Rigoletto and opening the season 2000-2001 with Il Trovatore, all productions conducted by Riccardo Muti. He will again be part of the opening production of La Scala Milano for the scason 2001-2002, this time as 'Jago' in Otello, again under the baton of Riccardo Muti.
Furthermore, in 2001, Leo Nucci is performing in a great number of major opera houses, more or less exclusively operas by G. Verdi of his repertory, on the occasion of the year of Commemoration of G-Verdi (hundred years from his death) - in Vienna Il Trovatore-, Un Ballo In Maschera and a new production of Nabucco, in Naples Don Carlos, in Zurich, ATTILA, at La Scala Milano Rigoletto; here furthermore took part, together with other famous colleagues like Placido Domingo, Ruggero Raimondi, José Carreras and many others in a Gala Concert in Parma entirely dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi (Verdi 100) and broadcast worldwide, conducted by Zubin Mehta,
His commitments for 2002 include Ernani, Simon Boccanegra and Rigoletto in Zurich, Pagliacci in Vienna and in Rome, Macbeth in Paris, La Traviata in Nizza, Il Barbiere Di Seviglia in Japan (on tour with the Teatro Comunale Bologna) and subsequently at La Scala Milano, Nabucco in Verona, Rigoletto at La Scala Milano, Macbeth in Turin.
A preview on 2003: Rigoletto and Nabucco in Zurich, Il Barbiere Di Siviglia in Palermo and in Vienna, Gianni Schicchi in Vienna, Simon Boccanegra in Naples, his first stage direction of an opera with Un Ballo In Maschera in Cagliari.
