A member of the Georgian Opera Theater in his
native Tbilissi since 1976, where he studied with Olimpi Khelashvilli,
Paata Burchuladze was among other young Soviet singers sent to Milan for
advanced training in the programs of the Teatro alla Scala. In 1981, Paata Burchuladze was awarded the First Prize in the Verdi Busseto Competition, before winning a gold medal and first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982 and 1985 and was a winner in the Luciano Pavarottis International Voice Competition. Paata Burchuladze first came to the attention of the international music world singing Ramphis/Aïda AT Covent Garden alongside K. Ricciarelli and L. Pavarottti, Maestro Zubin Mehta conducting. In 1987 in Salzburg, he sung the Requiem by Verdi and portrayed the Commendatore in Don Giovanni under Maestro Herbert von Karajan, who talked about a second Chaliapine. Since then, he has appeared on all the worlds leading opera scenes, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, at the Vienna Opera (Walter/Luisa Miller, Banquo/Macbeth, Dossifei/La Khovantchina, Boris Godunov) at the Scala of Milan (Nabucco, Luisa Miller, Aïda, Simone Boccanegra, I Lombardi), the Opera Garnier and the Opera Bastille in Paris (Macbeth, Boris Godunov, Nabucco, Faust, etc.) Famous for his interpretation of Czar Boris, Paata Burchuladze opened the 90/91 season at the Metropolitan Opera in this role, and later in the season, he repeated his acclaimed interpretation of this role at Covent Garden and at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. A versatile artist, Paata Burchuladze also performs in recitals and concerts, notably at La Scala, Covent Garden, Opera Bastille, Berlin etc A great specialist of the Russian repertory, as well as Italian, Paata Burchuladze was remarked for his interpretation of Rachmaninovs and Mussorgskys Melodies, which he recorded for the Decca Label, accompanied on the piano by Ludmilla Ivanova. The Académie Nationale du Disque Lyrique awarded him with the Grand Prix du Prestige Lyrique Orphée dOr 1987.
