Nora Gubisch

Mezzo-Soprano

Born in Paris, Nora Gubisch, began her musical studies in the Young Choir of Radio France and studied piano with Catherine Collard. She then studied singing at the Conservatory of Paris with Christiane Eda-Pierre where she won the first prize. Later she met Vera Rozsa who becomes her master.

She is now one of the most thought-after mezzos of her generation.

On opera stage she sings the title role of Carmen in Berlin, Paris, Zurich and many productions worldwide, « Juditha triumphans » (Vivaldi), Salammbô (Fenelon) at the Opéra de Paris, La Belle Hélène (Offenbach)  at the Salzbourg and  Aix-en-Provence Festivals, « The Rape of Lucretia » (Britten) at the Opéra de Lyon, Salomé (Mariotte), Tancredi (Rossini), Thérèse (Massenet) and also Sesto (« La Clemenza di Tito », Mozart), Penelope (« Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria », Monteverdi), Marguerite (« La Damnation de Faust », Berlioz), Charlotte (« Werther », Massenet), Judith (« Bluebeard’s Castle,Bartók), Amneris (« Aida », Verdi) and Wagnerian roles like Magdalene (« Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg »), Waltraute (« Götterdämmerung ») and Brangäne (« Trikstan und Isolde »)…

She appears on major international stages, under the direction of Sir Colin Davis, Georges Prêtre, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, James Conlon, Kent Nagano, Jesus Lopez Cobos, Evelino Pido, Myung-Whun Chung, Christoph Eschenbach, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Armin Jordan, Lorin Maazel and with the orchestras of New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, l’Orchestre National de France, the New Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the City of Birmingham Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the  bayerisches Rundfunk Orchester …

She sings also the oratorio and chamber music and since several years she gives recitals with the pianist Alain Altinoglu with whom she recorded already two discs of French melodies by Duparc and Ravel, critically acclaimed (Naive). Her discography also includes» Tipett’s « A child of our time» with Sir Colin Davis, “Perela” by Dusapin,Offenbach’s “Rheinnixen”, Humperdinck’s “Königskinder”, Kodaly’s  ”Hary Janos”, Escaïch’s » Les Nuits hallucinées”, “Therese” by Massenet (title role) and she also released an album “Folk Songs” (Naive) and an opera from Lalo “ La Jacquerie “…

Recent highlights were at the Liceu of Barcelona as Charlotte in » Werther », in Copenhague in « Blaubard’s castle », in Berlin with Mahler 3rd symphony, in many festivals in Germany with Mahler’s Rückert Lieder; also Amneris, »Aida, »in Brussel. Furthermore, she recently made a very impressive debut at the Vienna State Opera as Waltraud, and also sang with great success again Judith in Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s castle” new production at La Monnaie.

Among her future commitments, there will be a tour with Beethoven’s 9th symphony, she will also appear at the Festival de Radio-France et Montpellier, sing Chausson’s « Poeme de l’Amour et de la Mer » in Copenhague, « Alexandre Nievsky » by Prokoviev at the Musikverein Wien, « Romeo et Juliette » by Berlioz at la Philharmonie in Paris and Brangaene at La Monnaie, Bruessel.

Nora Gubisch has been appointed in France “Knight of Arts and Letters”.
